UPDATE: Gay Street lane shifts expected through end of July

UPDATE, July 14: The north entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot will be closed on Monday, July 17, as crews continue replacing a water main in the area. On-street parking adjacent to the lot will also be closed.

 The south entrance to the lot will remain open.

Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center lane to keep traffic flowing in both directions. 

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area.

UPDATE, July 13: The south entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot will be closed tomorrow, July 14, as crews continue replacing a water main along Gay Street. On-street parking adjacent to the parking lot will also be closed, but the north entrance to the lot will remain open.

Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center lane to keep traffic flowing in both directions. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area.

UPDATE, July 10, 3 p.m.: Crews will continue water main installation beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, July 10. The southbound lane of Gay Street will be closed between the Gay Street entrance to City Hall and the north entrance to the Gay Street Parking as well as between the south entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot and Magnolia Avenue.

Both entrances to the Gay Street Parking Lot will remain open, but the Gay Street entrance to City Hall's parking will be closed.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area. Temporary lane closures are expected on Gay Street between Glenn and Magnolia avenues throughout the project, which is expected to last through the end of July.

UPDATE, July 10, 9 a.m.: The south entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot will be closed today, July 10, as crews continue work to replace a water main along Gay Street. The north entrance to the parking lot will remain open.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area. Temporary lane closures are expected on Gay Street between Glenn and Magnolia avenues throughout the project, which is expected to last through the end of July.

UPDATE, July 6: The southbound lane of Gay Street will be closed between the entrance to City Hall and the south entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot on Friday, July 7. Crews will continue work to install a new water main along Gay Street.

The north entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot will be closed along with the on-street parking adjacent to the parking lot. The south entrance to the parking lot will remain open.

Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center turn lane to allow traffic to continue flowing in both directions. Temporary lane closures are expected on Gay Street between Glenn and Magnolia avenues through the project, which is expected to last through the end of July.

UPDATE, July 5: The following closures are expected to begin around 5 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, as work continues to install a new water main along Gay Street:

  • The southbound lane of Gay Street will be closed between Tichenor Avenue and the north entrance to the Gay Street parking lot while the Water Board installs pipe. The Gay Street entrance to City Hall parking will be closed, but parking along the side of City Hall will remain accessible via the ground floor of the Municipal Parking Deck. Additional parking is available along Tichenor Avenue, in the Gay Street Parking Lot and along College Street.
  • The southbound lane of Gay Street between the north entrance to the Gay Street parking lot and Magnolia Avenue will close temporarily during asphalt cutting. On-street parking along the west side of Gay Street will be closed. At least one entrance to the Gay Street Parking Lot will remain open during work.
Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center turn lane to allow traffic to continue flowing in both directions. Temporary lane closures are expected on Gay Street between Glenn and Magnolia avenues through the project, which is expected to last through the end of July.

UPDATE, June 29: The following closures have been scheduled for the week of July 3 as work continues to install a new water main on Gay Street. As a reminder, temporary lane closures are expected on Tichenor Avenue between Glenn and Magnolia avenues throughout the project, which is expected to last through the end of July.

MONDAY, JULY 3

The southbound lane of Gay Street will be closed between Glenn and Tichenor Avenue on Monday, July 3, during water main installation. The northbound lane will remain open, but southbound traffic will be detoured around the closure via Glenn Avenue, College Street and Tichenor Avenue. The intersection of Tichenor Avenue and Gay Street will remain open.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5

Tichenor Avenue will be closed to through traffic, but local traffic will still have access to businesses along Tichenor via College Street.

June 28: AUBURN, Ala.- The Water Works Board of the City of Auburn are installing a new water main along Gay Street between Glenn and Magnolia avenues. Portions of the southbound lane will be closed during the work, which is expected to last through the end of July.

Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center lane to keep traffic flowing in both directions. Work will begin just north of Tichenor Avenue and progress south toward Magnolia Avenue. Closures are anticipated at Tichenor Avenue and the entrances to the City Hall parking lot and the Gay Street Parking Lot. This release will be updated once dates for the closures have been determined.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and to follow posted signage to navigate around the work. Some water outages are anticipated during the work, and customers will be notified ahead of time.
